About This Audit
The Devereux Children’s Behavioral Health Center underwent a review for its eligibility for the 2026 Tobacco Settlement payments from the Department of Human Services (DHS). The Tobacco Settlement Act mandates DHS to compensate hospitals for uncompensated care. The review checked if Devereux had any eligible extraordinary expense claims for FY 2024 or inaccuracy in reported inpatient and Medical Assistance days for FY 2023. No eligible extraordinary expense claims were found for the center, and discrepancies in reported days were noted and required corrections. DHS will consider both the uncompensated care and extraordinary expense methods for eligibility and allow the facility to choose the preferable method if eligible under both. Facilities are advised to submit additional eligible claims by October 31, 2025. The DHS will finalize the Tobacco Settlement payment distribution date for eligible facilities. The report was distributed to relevant officials and is publicly available for review.
