About This Audit

The Pittston Township Volunteer Firemen’s Relief Association in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, underwent a compliance audit for the period from January 1, 2022, to December 31, 2023. Conducted by the Department of the Auditor General, the audit aimed to verify corrective measures taken in response to a prior finding and assess compliance with state laws, contracts, bylaws, and procedures regarding the receipt of state aid and expenditure of funds. While the relief association took appropriate corrective action on past findings and complied significantly with relevant requirements, the audit could not independently verify the cash balance at year-end due to the lack of third-party confirmation from the bank. The relief association’s reported cash balance was $89,140, with total expenditures amounting to $38,407. The association appropriately addressed a previous unauthorized expenditure by obtaining reimbursement from the affiliated fire company. The audit report emphasizes the importance of maintaining compliance with all applicable standards.
