HARRISBURG (Feb. 1, 2019) – Auditor General Eugene DePasquale today issued the following statement regarding 161 criminal charges filed against the Pittsburgh Water & Sewer Authority:

“I am grateful to Attorney General Shapiro for investigating the Pittsburgh Water & Sewer Authority and helping to hold the authority accountable to the people.

“My 2017 audit found PWSA’s deteriorating water lines and financial distress were caused by years of mismanagement, lack of leadership, and impaired decision making.

“As today’s chargers show, those bad decisions included violations of the state Safe Drinking Water Act designed to protect the health and safety of residents. My audit followed by DEP fines and now criminal charges indicate a trend that is indefensible.

“Threatening the water quality of the people of Pittsburgh — and anywhere else — is unacceptable in every way, shape and form.”
