HARRISBURG (March 8, 2019) – Auditor General Eugene DePasquale today asked the Scranton School District’s chief recovery officer to consider adding a seat on the financial recovery advisory committee for the district’s hardworking support staff, saying they deserve to have a say in turning around the deeply troubled district.

“I have repeatedly called for the SEIU 32BJ, which represents more than 200 district employees, to have a seat on the committee,” DePasquale said. “I’m asking the district’s new chief recovery officer to work with the Pennsylvania Department of Education to add a seat for the 32BJ because their members’ voices belong in the conversation.

“I’m also urging the General Assembly to amend the PA School Code to ensure that labor organizations representing 15 percent or more of a district’s staff automatically receive a seat on such committees.”

DePasquale will visit Scranton next week to release his recommendations for the district’s financial recovery plan.

DePasquale’s October 2017 audit report on the Scranton School District found “serious financial instability and an extreme level of board and administrative staff dysfunction” at a level rarely seen in school district audits. The 107-page audit report, which covered July 2012 through June 2016, contained nine findings and 38 recommendations for improvement.
