HARRISBURG (Feb. 21, 2019) – Auditor General Eugene DePasquale today said he will hold a town hall meeting to discuss ideas for improving the Penn Hills School District on Feb. 28 at the Boyce Campus of the Community College of Allegheny County.

“I invite students, teachers, support staff and parents to bring suggestions about how we can come together as a community to turn around the Penn Hills School District,” DePasquale said.

The Feb. 28 public forum will be held in the lecture hall at the Boyce Campus of the Community College of Allegheny County, 595 Beatty Road, Monroeville. Doors will open at 6 p.m. and the meeting is scheduled to run from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Individuals interested in speaking will be asked to sign up at the event. Backpacks, bags, and food and drink are not permitted in the lecture hall.

DePasquale’s 2016 audit of Penn Hills found a shocking level of mismanagement and lack of oversight that led to the district’s enormous debt problem. The district went deeply into debt to build a new high school and consolidate several elementary schools. As a result, the school board this week voted to seek a 6 percent tax increase and previously cut numerous teaching and administrative positions.

Last month, the state Department of Education placed the district into financial recovery status and appointed a recovery officer to help guide the district back onto solid footing.
