Auditor General DePasquale Issues Statement on Possible Sunshine Act, School Code Violations by School District of Philadelphia

HARRISBURG (Nov. 19, 2013)– Auditor General Eugene DePasquale today released the following statement following media reports that the School District of Philadelphia hired dozens of employees – six of whom are paid salaries of $100,000 or more annually – without proper approvals of the School Reform Commission:

“If these media reports are indeed true – that the School District of Philadelphia violated the Sunshine Act and the School Code by hiring staff without following proper procedures – then it raises serious issues with transparency in Pennsylvania’s largest school district.

“The public has a right to know how their tax dollars are being spent and if those tax dollars are being appropriately used to provide educational opportunities to the children of the district.

“As Pennsylvania Auditor General I pledge to take a very close look at the School District of Philadelphia’s compliance with state laws we begin our audit of the district next spring.”
