Auditor General DePasquale Releases Statement on Passing of Former Pittsburgh Mayor Sophie Masloff
HARRISBURG (August 18, 2014) – Auditor General Eugene DePasquale today released the following statement on the passing of former Pittsburgh Mayor, Sophie Masloff:
“Pittsburgh lost a true champion Sunday afternoon with the passing of Sophie Masloff. Sophie dedicated much of her life to the people of Pittsburgh as the city’s first female city council president and city mayor.
“Sophie was a family friend. She served tirelessly on the city council with my grandfather, Eugene “Jeep” DePasquale. He was a huge supporter in her campaign for mayor. My grandfather long respected her candid leadership and fierce determination.
“Sophie’s vision for PNC Park was revolutionary and years before its time. She had a kind heart. She was a good listener. And she knew how to relate to people.
“When I was in high school I remember her anti-garbage campaign where big street-sweepers sporting the slogan: ‘Sophie’s Choice – A Clean City’ vigilantly scoured every block, because Sophie insisted on keeping her city beautiful. Sophie made Pittsburgh a better place for everyone. She was a legend, and she will be missed.”
