Auditor General DePasquale Reviewing Request to Probe Scranton School Board IT Department

HARRISBURG (Jan. 4, 2019) – Auditor General Eugene DePasquale is reviewing a request by several Scranton School Board members to audit the school district’s troubled IT department.

In October 2017, DePasquale issued a scathing 107-page audit of the district that included nine findings and 38 recommendations for improvement, and had led to first-degree felony charges against the district’s former fleet manager.

“My 2017 report found the district failed to provide adequate oversight of the IT inventory process and had gaps in its inventory records,” DePasquale said. “The district never followed through on its promise to conduct its own audit of the IT department, which leaves me with lots of questions.”

Last month, a divided school board voted to table a motion to ask DePasquale to audit the IT department. Three dissenting board members – Katie Gilmartin, Mark McAndrew and Tom Schuster – subsequently wrote to the Auditor General as private citizens to seek his help.

DePasquale will formally respond to their letter in the near future.

The Auditor General has scheduled a Jan. 23 town hall meeting in Scranton to discuss improving public education.
