Auditor General, Treasurer Invite Public to Celebrate Black History Month
HARRISBURG (Feb. 18, 2020) – Auditor General Eugene DePasquale and State Treasurer Joe Torsella today invited the public to attend a Black History Month celebration at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 20, at the State Museum of Pennsylvania, 300 North St., Harrisburg.
Richard H. Utley, a nationally recognized author, is the scheduled keynote speaker. Utley, a Pittsburgh native, formerly served as Deputy of Administration in the Department of the Auditor General. His presentation is entitled, “My War Too: Blacks in World War II.”
“Richard is a pillar of our community,” Auditor General Eugene DePasquale said. “In addition to the excellent work he did as a member of this department, Richard is a tireless promoter of positive change here in Harrisburg and across Pennsylvania.”
“The sacrifice our democracy requires has always been widely shared, but far too narrowly recognized,” said State Treasurer Joe Torsella. “I’m grateful to Mr. Richard H. Utley for sharing so much about the African-American community’s role in World War II. Black History Month isn’t just an opportunity to celebrate, it’s a chance to learn and gather a greater understanding of the lives of everyone we’re meant to serve, every month of the year. I’m proud of our department’s participation in this event, and want to thank the Auditor General’s team for a great job of putting it together this year.”
Utley wrote the book, “Total Entertainment Package,” and a spoken word album “The World Is in Your Hands.” He owns and publishes the Central Pennsylvania Black Business Directory and Resource Guide, My War Too Journal, and hosts a biweekly podcast called, “Did You Know?”
Utley also serves on the Hamilton Health Center Board of Directors, is Board Chair of the Camp Curtin YMCA and as a member of the Harrisburg Rotary Club. He serves on the United Way of the Capital Region Impact Committee and is a mentor for the CARE (Court Assisted Re-entry) Federal Court Program.
