HARRISBURG (Dec. 28, 2018) – Auditor General Eugene DePasquale today issued the following statement regarding the impact on over 320 Pennsylvanians serving in the Coast Guard who are not getting paid during the federal government shutdown:

“I am furious that 42,000 Coast Guard members — over 320 of them from Pennsylvania — are protecting our ports and coasts without pay while Congress and President Trump ring in the new year with their families.

“All elected federal officials should have their paychecks stopped immediately so that they can feel the financial pain their actions are having on the excellent men and women of the Coast Guard who continue to protect us.

“It is unconscionable that members of Congress are receiving their six figure salaries, while Coast Guard members are putting their lives on line and not receiving a penny.”

Coast Guard members are the only branch of the military under the Department of Homeland Security rather than the Department of Defense, which is being funded during the shutdown.
