LANSDALE, PA – Auditor General Timothy L. DeFoor today concluded his statewide Financial Literacy Month tour with Senator Tracey Pennycuick (R-24) at North Penn High School in Lansdale, presenting administrators with a ‘Be Money $mart’ commendation for their work to integrate financial literacy education into the school’s curriculum.
“This month I had the privilege of going to classrooms all over Pennsylvania to see for myself how financial literacy is being taught at all grade levels,” Auditor General DeFoor said. “North Penn High School is a great school to highlight because teachers are doing the work to prepare their students for a brighter and more financially secure future. Financial literacy needs to be taught at every grade level and teachers are showing us just how to do it.”
National Financial Literacy Month is commemorated each year in April and emphasizes the importance of being financially literate and encourages people to learn about the ways they can become fiscally smart.
During the past month, Auditor General DeFoor has crisscrossed the state highlighting the need for financial literacy education for all Pennsylvanians and has been promoting resources everyone can use to help them ‘Be Money $mart’. Since April 1, 2025, Auditor General DeFoor has:
- Partnered with Representative Hill-Evans (D-York), the Harrisburg Chamber & CREDC and the PA Chamber to kick off Financial Literacy Month and support Rep. Evans’ resolution R. 120, which recognizes April as Financial Literacy Month in Pennsylvania;
- Presented Joseph’s Catholic School in Hanover with a ‘Be Money $mart’ commendation for integrating financial literacy education into their curriculum;
- Joined CrossState Credit Union Association and First Capital Federal Credit Union at Wallace Elementary to teach students the importance of saving, spending and sharing through an interactive “Moon Jar” lesson;
- Presented Bodine High School in Philadelphia with a ‘Be Money $mart’ commendation and participated in a financial literacy class where high school students learned about budgeting and the stock market;
- Toured the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia to see first-hand how money is made;
- Read to students at Winding Creek Elementary in Mechanicsburg and emphasized that it’s never too early to start learning about money;
- Visited the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh and the Free Library of Philadelphia to highlight their financial literacy programs and elevate the work they are doing in their communities;
- Attended Pheple Federal Credit Union’s Annual Meeting to learn how they are expanding their services and teaching the next generation of Pennsylvanians the basics of money;
- Participated in a financial literacy workshop for high school students led by True Colors and Members 1st Federal Credit Union;
- Presented Wyoming Area High School in Exeter with a ‘Be Money $mart’ commendation and taught 4th graders the significance of compound interest;
- Appeared as a guest on PHEAA’s podcast, “The Higher Education Access Corner,” to talk about financial literacy; and
- Partnered with Harrisburg University of Science and Technology and Members 1st on a statewide student financial literacy scholarship competition.
