Auditor General DeFoor Observes MLK Day, Urges All Pennsylvanians to Find Ways to Strengthen our Communities
HARRISBURG – In observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Auditor General Timothy L. DeFoor today urged Pennsylvanians to find ways to strengthen their communities.
“Dr. King taught us that our society becomes better and stronger when all people have the opportunity to participate and contribute,” DeFoor said. “We must dedicate ourselves to building a Commonwealth where every voice is heard and every child has an equal chance to succeed.”
DeFoor said one of the best ways to pay tribute to Dr. King’s life and legacy of service to others is to find ways to make a lasting difference in our own communities, whether through volunteerism or making charitable donations to organizations that help people who are struggling.
A minister and civil rights leader, Dr. King was assassinated in April of 1968. He was the first private citizen in modern history to have a federal holiday designated in his honor. It is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities.
