DILLSBURG, Pa. – Auditor General Timothy L. DeFoor today attended New Hope Ministries ‘Back-to-School Daze Craze’ in Dillsburg to help distribute school supplies for the upcoming school year and highlight the work being done to improve financial literacy across Central Pennsylvania.

“It’s essential that we continue to create a Pennsylvania where students can learn and grow,” Auditor General DeFoor said. “New Hope Ministries is helping students get the necessary supplies they need to thrive in school, and is doing great work to teach the community about financial literacy. Knowing how to Be Money Smart is one of the best lessons a person can learn in order to set themselves up for future financial success.”

New Hope Ministries is a community-based, Christian social service agency that shows the love and hope of Christ by meeting the needs of low-income and needy families and individuals through crisis assistance centers in Dillsburg, Dover, Enola, Hanover, Littlestown, Mechanicsburg, New Oxford, Red Land, and West Shore.

New Hope provides help with food, housing, utility, transportation, job training, employment needs, and youth programs to 20,000 individuals every year. Financial literacy promotion and education is provided to adults and youth year-round through one-on-one meetings, in Dollars and Sense budget and credit classes, in the teen workforce development program, and during special events for families.

DeFoor has spent the last two years promoting financial literacy across the state as part of his Be Money Smart initiative. Since initiative launched in 2021, DeFoor has:

  • Visited all state and state related universities in Pennsylvania to talk about job and internship opportunities within the department and the importance of knowing how your money works;
  • Met with students participating in the State YMCA of Pennsylvania Youth and Government program and visited several YMCAs across the state to talk about financial literacy;
  • Worked with Junior Achievement to emphasize financial literacy messages to elementary school students;
  • Partnered with local financial institutions to provide financial literacy resources to the public; and
  • Partnered with Harrisburg University of Science and Technology and Members 1st to coordinate a statewide financial literacy competition for high school students in Pennsylvania.
