Auditor General DeFoor Visits York County Controller to Discuss Transforming and Improving the Auditing Process
YORK, PA – Auditor General Timothy L. DeFoor today visited York County Controller Greg Bower to discuss how the auditing process is changing at the state and local levels as part of a statewide tour of county controllers.
“We have made great progress in transforming and improving our auditing processes,” Auditor General DeFoor said. “Over the next several months, I’ll be visiting with controllers from across the state to share ideas, best practices and learn how we can work better together to ensure Pennsylvania tax dollars are spent properly.”
Since 2021, Auditor General DeFoor has worked to transform and modernize the department through technology upgrades; piloting risk-based auditing processes to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of audits; and creating job opportunities within the department through the Intern to Hire program.
The ‘Intern to Hire Career Pathway’ creates an opportunity for college students to gain auditing experience at the state-level and lead to full-time employment at the department.
To participate, individuals must be enrolled in an accredited college or university as a full-time undergraduate student and be in a declared bachelor’s degree program with a focus on accounting, information technology or another related field. Students must also have successfully completed at least 60 college credits.
After being accepted as an intern, students must then complete the following to be hired into a full-time position:
- Complete 900 hours of work during the school year or within three months of Hours can be earned over the course of two years, part-time during the school year or over holiday breaks;
- Achieve overall “satisfactory” remarks in their final Employee Performance Review;
- Graduate with a bachelor’s degree that includes 12 accounting or IT credits; and
- Meet Pennsylvania residency requirements for
“In every community we visit, Pennsylvanians want to understand how audits impact them and how they can better understand how their state and local tax dollars are used,” Auditor General DeFoor said. “Every county controller has the same goal, so by working together we can protect and educate our residents.”
Auditor General DeFoor has also made it a priority to educate Pennsylvanians about the importance of financial literacy through his ‘Be Money Smart’ initiative.
Since initiative launched in 2021, DeFoor has:
- Visited all state and state related universities in Pennsylvania to talk about job and internship opportunities within the department and the importance of knowing how your money works;
- Met with students participating in the State YMCA of Pennsylvania Youth and Government program and visited YMCAs across the state to talk about financial literacy;
- Worked with Junior Achievement to emphasize financial literacy messages to elementary school students;
- Advocated for financial literacy education across the state;
- Partnered with local financial institutions to provide financial literacy resources to the public; and
- Partnered with Harrisburg University of Science and Technology and Members 1st to coordinate a statewide financial literacy competition for high school students in Pennsylvania.
