HARRISBURG (Feb. 7, 2019) – Auditor General Eugene DePasquale issued the following statement about the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s filing to prevent UPMC and Highmark from severing their business relationship when a consent decree expires this summer, potentially impacting tens of thousands of health care consumers.
“I support the Attorney General’s effort to bring UPMC and Highmark together to resolve their differences and do the right thing for health care consumers. Access to health care is too important of an issue for consumers to be left holding the bag if a lasting agreement can’t be reached.
“I still believe that by focusing on what is best for patients, the two health care giants can compete in a way that serves the needs of Pennsylvania consumers and makes better use of billions of taxpayer dollars that go toward providing care.”
