HARRISBURG (Dec. 20, 2018) – Auditor General Eugene DePasquale today said he is appalled the Scranton School District Board of Directors continues to violate the public’s trust. Last night, the board voted to hike taxes and later violated its own policies by installing a new board member without public comment.

“The actions taken at last night’s meeting solidify the Scranton school board’s standing as the worst in the state,” DePasquale said. “The board has shown a complete disregard for students and taxpayers.

“If I had the authority, I would dissolve this board. Since I do not, it is important that state leaders and the great people of Scranton hold this board, and the actions it has taken, accountable.

“While in Scranton earlier this month, I put the district on notice that I am watching what they do. I’m surprised residents aren’t storming the district today with pitchforks and torches after the board’s latest shenanigans.

“I will not stop speaking out until the culture of corruption at the district changes. I am again imploring district officials to focus on what should be their primary purpose: educating students.”

In October 2017, DePasquale issued a scathing 107-page audit of the district that included nine findings and 38 recommendations for improvement, and had led to first-degree felony charges against the former Scranton School District fleet manager.
